The practical answer
Start with a website that search systems can access and pages that answer real buying questions. Build relevant coverage beyond your own site. Then check whether your brand is mentioned, whether a source is linked, and whether those appearances bring qualified visits.
There is no published checklist that guarantees a ChatGPT recommendation. A useful audit separates access problems, content gaps and missing coverage instead of treating them as one “AI score”.
What you can actually influence
OpenAI says ChatGPT can search the web automatically or when a user requests it. Search can produce links to supporting sources; those answers can still contain errors. This guide concerns that search experience, rather than promising to change what a model remembers from training. [3]
For a business, distinguish these three observations before discussing performance:
- Brand mention
- The answer names your business. It may not link to you.
- Source citation
- The answer links to a page. That page may be your website, a publisher, or another source.
- Referral and enquiry
- A person follows a link and takes a useful action on your site. A mention alone does not establish either event.
If an answer names your business but links to a magazine article, improving that article and improving your landing page are different jobs. Record the actual linked URL before deciding what to change.
Check search access before commissioning more articles
OpenAI uses separate controls for search and possible model training. Allowing one does not require allowing the other. [1]
| Agent | Role | What it means for your site |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Search discovery | The relevant robots.txt control for inclusion in ChatGPT search. |
| GPTBot | Content that may be used for training | A separate decision from search access. |
| ChatGPT-User | User-initiated visits | A visit from this agent is not evidence of an automatic search crawl. |
For a public site that wants search access while opting out of possible training, the relevant groups could look like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /Merge these groups into the existing file only if they match your policy. Preserve rules protecting other paths and crawlers.
Robots.txt is only one layer. Check the target page through the CDN, confirm that it returns its content rather than a challenge screen, and inspect server logs for blocked requests. OpenAI also publishes SearchBot IP ranges. A successful request with a copied user-agent string does not prove the real crawler can get through.
Check HTML robots directives, canonical URLs, redirects and internal links as part of the same audit. For Google’s AI features, Google specifically requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet; it does not require a special AI schema or a new AI text file. Those are Google’s requirements, not a published ChatGPT ranking formula. [6]
Give an answer a source can support
“We are a leading company with exceptional solutions” gives a prospective customer almost nothing to check. Replace it with the details that change a buying decision: service area, eligibility, materials, delivery conditions, evidence of work and the date those details were verified.
Consider a fictional furniture retailer preparing a page about Italian sofas. These are editorial examples, not claims about a real store:
A claim without useful detail
“Discover our premium collection of luxury Italian sofas, offering quality and elegance for every home.”
Facts a buyer can evaluate
“This model is available in two widths. The showroom has the smaller version on display. Confirm fabric availability and the current delivery estimate before ordering.”
The second version still needs real measurements, a showroom location and a current estimate before publication. Its advantage is specificity, not a special sentence pattern that makes an AI system cite it.
Build the page around what the buyer needs to resolve. A comparison can use a table; installation advice may need labelled photographs; a delivery policy needs exceptions and a date. Add named sources for technical claims and identify who is responsible for the information. Do not manufacture rankings, customer quotes or “best” lists to make the page look authoritative.
What does the brand-mention research actually prove?
Ahrefs’ 2025 analysis began with 75,000 brands and found a 0.664 correlation between web mentions and visibility in Google AI Overviews. It selected domains with DR above 40 and a qualifying keyword with at least 800 monthly searches; roughly 26% with no AI Overview mentions were excluded from the correlation analysis. This was not a representative sample of every small business, or a study of ChatGPT alone. [4]
The December 2025 follow-up included ChatGPT and AI Mode. Web mentions remained strongly correlated with visibility (0.66–0.71), while YouTube mentions had the strongest reported relationship, around 0.737. These are associations, not evidence that purchasing a particular number of articles causes recommendations. [5]
Before buying a placement, ask what audience the publication serves,
why the story belongs there, what facts will be included, and how
you will inspect the finished page. Distinguish independent
editorial coverage from a paid article. Google asks publishers to
identify paid links with rel="sponsored"; nofollow is also acceptable. A paid link should not be presented as a purchase
of organic ranking credit. [7]
A Dubai example, and the limit of a screenshot
Our July 2026 capture for the query “best italian furniture stores in Dubai” shows Solomia Home named in the response, including a budget comparison. The excerpt below is the evidence preserved on this site.

This establishes that the name appeared in that captured answer. The crop does not show the full prompt, model version, source list or repeat-test history. It therefore cannot establish a stable recommendation rate, the source that caused the mention, or the effect of one placement. Today’s response may differ.
For a stronger case study, preserve the full answer and its source URLs alongside the prompt, date, search setting and market. Repeat the same test and connect observations to referral data. That is the evidence needed to assess a campaign.
Measure visibility without inventing a ranking
Start with a fixed set of questions your sales team actually hears. For a UAE retailer, separate discovery (“Italian furniture showrooms in Dubai”), comparison (“leather or fabric sofa for a family home”) and brand verification (“where is [brand] located?”). Keep English and Arabic tests separate, and record which market and language each prompt uses.
Our suggested baseline is 20 questions, tested three times over a defined week in fresh conversations, with search enabled. This is a practical sampling method, not an industry benchmark. Keep the prompt set and test conditions stable when comparing the next period. Record missing or failed answers rather than quietly discarding them.
| Observation | Calculation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Brand named in 6 answers | 6 ÷ 20 = 30% | Mention rate for this question set. |
| Your site cited in 3 answers | 3 ÷ 20 = 15% | Direct citation rate for this set. |
| 4 qualified enquiries | 4 recorded enquiries | A business outcome; attribution needs separate evidence. |
Save the exact source URL, not just the publisher name. A citation
to a directory and one to your product page suggest different next
actions. OpenAI says its search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Use that alongside analytics referral data, landing pages and
recorded enquiry sources; it measures identifiable visits, not
everyone who saw an answer. [2]

Your first month: fix, document, then re-test
-
Week 1: establish what is missing
Capture the baseline. Audit crawler access and the landing pages people should reach. Record whether the issue is no mention, an inaccurate description, an unsuitable citation, or visits that do not convert.
-
Week 2: improve the source material
Correct business facts, strengthen the pages behind buying questions and add evidence that customers can inspect. Keep a change log with the page URL and publication date.
-
Week 3: close relevant coverage gaps
Identify publications already serving your audience. Prepare a useful story or comparison with accurate brand details. Keep paid coverage clearly identified and review the finished page.
-
Week 4: repeat the same measurement
Compare mentions, citations and identifiable referrals with the baseline. Report what changed and what did not. Four weeks is a review interval, not a deadline for appearing in ChatGPT.
If coverage is the gap, our done-for-you UAE placements handle the research, writing and publishing. If the underlying site is inaccessible or its content is weak, address that first through a technical and content review. Buying more articles does not repair a blocked or unhelpful destination page.
